The Department of Physics, University of Alberta (www.physics.ualberta.ca)
invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in either
experimental or theoretical biophysics. We primarily seek candidates at the
Assistant Professor level, but exceptional candidates at a more senior
level may be considered. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in physics,
biophysics, or an appropriately related field and have an excellent
research record. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and
maintain an internationally recognized independent research program. As a
faculty member in the Department of Physics, the successful applicant is
expected to obtain external funding, participate in departmental
activities, mentor graduate students, and contribute to our educational
responsibilities by effectively teaching undergraduate and graduate courses.
The Department of Physics has 48 faculty with research interests in
condensed matter physics, astrophysics, space physics, geophysics, particle
physics and biophysics. Access to a wide range of infrastructure for
biophysical research is available on campus, from laser spectroscopy labs
and microscopy facilities to structural and chemical characterization labs,
nano-fabrication facilities, molecular biology services, clusters for
high-performance computation, and the Peter S. Allen Magnetic Resonance
Centre. An extensive medical research and hospital complex at the
University of Alberta offers many opportunities for interdisciplinary
collaboration, as does the Nanotechnology Initiative with the National
Research Council. Initiatives by the Governments of Alberta and Canada
provide exceptional opportunities for additional funding to establish new
research programs at the University of Alberta. For example, several of our
professors hold Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF) Chairs.
