Relating Monolayer Dynamics and Adsorption to Composition and Morphology An essential, function of LS is to prevent the Laplace instability, which drives gas out of smaller alveoli and into larger ones, effectively deflating smaller alveoli and thickening the alveolar lining fluid. The Laplace Instability occurs when the capillary pressure, ΔP=2γ/R, in small alveoli (radius RS) exceeds that of larger alveoli (radius RL): 2γ/RS > 2γ/RL. This post-doctoral position is designed to examine the hypothesis that the dynamic resistance of the LS monolayer to compression can reverse the Laplace instability. The dilatational modulus, 𝜀 𝜔 = 𝐴 𝜔 𝜕𝛾 𝜕𝐴 , relates the change in surface tension, γ, to the change in molecular area, A. For 𝜕 𝛾 𝑅 𝜕𝑅 = 2𝜀 – 𝛾 𝑅! > 0, or 2ε−γ >0, the Laplace pressure decreases with decreasing radius, suppressing the Laplace Instability. However, if 2ε−γ is negative, even small variations in inflation would drive spontaneous collapse of some alveoli, and hyper-extension of others. My group
has designed and built a novel capillary pressure microtensiometer to measure ε. The post-doc will map out ε for clinical and model lung surfactants as a function of surface pressure and frequency to determine the effects of solid phase fraction (related to saturated vs. unsaturated lipid fraction), domain morphology (related to lung surfactant proteins SP-B and SP-C, cholesterol and fatty acid fractions) and subphase compositions of lysolipids and/or albumin. If the Laplace instability does play a causative role in the progression of ARDS, then any successful therapy must reverse this instability. Reversing the Laplace instability requires understanding how to accelerate the interfacial adsorption of LS relative to albumin and lyso-PC, which we propose to
study using confocal microscopy.
The ideal applicant would be a trained experimentalist with a background in the physics and chemistry of interfacial phenomena. Prior experience with confocal or two-photon microscopy, design of experimental apparatus, Labview experience, handling and preparing lipid and protein mixtures, atomic force microscopy, Langmuir isotherms.
Previous students and post-docs on this project have gone on to careers in both industry and academia.

Project Director for Science in the Classroom (SitC) position through the AAAS

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks a Project Director for Science in the Classroom (SitC) to plan, direct, and implement activities of project(s) including managing financial and staff resources in order to raise awareness and participation of the overall program. 

Major duties and responsibilities
• Conceptualizes content and plans and implements program activities for Science in the Classroom (SitC). Oversees daily operations and develops and monitors program budgets
• Supervises professional and support staff (one visiting scholar, one Research Associate, with the potential for an expanding staff) including assigning work, monitoring work progress, providing training, conducting performance reviews, and recommending changes in staff salaries
• Solicits input from and work with advisers in terms of the long term direction of SitC

• Conceptualizes and may organize meetings, conferences, and symposia, delivers seminars and conducts other community outreach activities to explain project issues and increase public awareness and understanding of issues, attends and presents at scientific meetings
• Develops proposals for program funding from federal and private sector organizations, interacts with funders and potential funders
• Remains current on the education research literature related to SitC and relevant AAAS education efforts.  May be asked to summarize recent education research for conferences, seminars, and other writing opportunities  
• Initiates design and development of new projects, including identifying and securing grant funding and integrating projects into the larger vision of EHR
• Reviews and evaluates effectiveness of projects in coordination with other Directorate projects and programs
• Develops partnerships with other organizations undertaking related work
• In collaboration with fellow Program Directors and Directorate Head, may formulate policy for project(s). Stays abreast of project issues and serves as advocate for project or program issues at professional, governmental, and community meetings and hearings

Minimum requirements
• Position requires advanced university or college training leading to a PhD degree in a STEM discipline

For over 60 years, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has remained the premier Federal agency supporting basic research at the frontiers of discovery across all fields, as well as science and engineering education at all levels.

The Senior Executive Service (SES) covers managerial positions above GS-15 in the Federal Service. Persons appointed to the SES are eligible for health benefits, life insurance, social security, Federal retirement and thrift savings plan coverage, and participate in the Federal leave system. Career appointees are eligible for bonuses based on performance in addition to base pay.

Competitive status is not required, veteran’s preference does not apply and there are no grade restrictions. New appointees to the SES are required to serve a one-year probationary period. MCB supports quantitative, predictive, and theory-driven research and related activities designed to decipher the molecular underpinnings of complex living systems.
